India : Ancient Rock Sculptures Discovered in Sindhudurg District, Maharashtra

India : Ancient Rock Sculptures Discovered in Sindhudurg District, Maharashtra

Rock sculptures dating back to between 4,000-7,000 BC have been found in a well-preserved condition in the forests near Kudopi village in Sindhudurg district of coastal Konkan region..

There are more than 60 big and small images of Mother Goddess, birds and animals, found in a single location of around 20,000 square feet, considered one of the biggest such concentration anywhere in the country, Satish Lalit, leader of an expedition team which made the discovery last May.

"Though similar carvings have been found in other parts of India, this is the first find on a red soil laterite plateau. These are petro-glyphs unlike the picto-graphs found in places like Amravati," Lalit, a member of Rock Art Society of India (RASI).

With this significant historical find dating back to over 6,000 years from now, Sindhudurg district, around 490 km from Mumbai on the Maharashtra-Goa border, will be catapulted onto the global rock-art map.

Last week (Nov 17) Lalit, who is also the media advisor to Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, presented his findings before the RASI's 17th National Congress held in Badami, Karnataka.

Eminent historian Sundara Adiga described the findings as "unique and very beautiful" pieces of art.

"The findings, in terms of the variety, the depiction, art and sheer beauty are incomparable, of world class. They provide an insight into the human development in that age and must be preserved carefully," Adiga said at the congress.

Lalit explained that the manner in which the rocks have been carved indicate that they belong to the Neolithic era which flourished in southern Asia between 4,000-7,000 BC.

"The most striking carving is of a 15-foot tall Mother Goddess with all the internationally known symbols indicating her status. During that era, women were accorded a very high social status, were revered and worshipped by human tribes," he added.

In 2002, Lalit had discovered another site of hard rock carvings in Hivale, Sindhudurg. And similar sites have been found in Goa, Wirdi, Khanavli, and Nivli in Ratnagiri district, indicating the possibility of a 'lineage' of such art.

The site was discovered after several trips in the deep forests and mountains following valuable tips given by villagers.

Betty and Barney Hill Alien Abduction (1961)

Betty and Barney Hill Alien Abduction (1961)

On the night of September 19th, 1961 a mixed-race couple, Betty and Barney Hill, from Portsmouth, New Hampshire witnessed something which shaped the modern extraterrestrial folklore. At around 10:30 p.m. the couple was on their way home from a vacation in Niagara Falls and Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Betty noticed a bright sphere of light in the skies while Barney navigated U.S Route 3. She initially thought the object was a falling star, but oddly it shifted upward, just like an airplane or a satellite. As it grew bigger and brighter and moved erratically, the couple stopped the car at a scenic picnic spot just to the south of Twin Mountain. Betty took binoculars and observed a unfamilliar craft flashing multicolored lights. In the meantime, Barney retrieved a handgun that he had hidden in the trunk of the car. Suddenly, the object swiftly descended in their direction and they realized that the object in question was not an accustomed phenomena. They quickly jumped into the vehicle and drove toward a narrow, isolated, hilly stretch of the road – Franconia Notch. The couple drove very slowly to observe the object, which approached even closer to their location. The craft was moving erratically and bounced back and forth in the night sky. Eventually, a mile south of Indian Head, the object swiftly descended toward their vehicle causing Barney to stop the car in the middle of the road. Just approximately 100 feet above the Hills’ 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air, the massive, noiseless object hovered and filled the entire field of the car’s windshield. With the handgun in his pocket, Barney
moved away from the car, closer to the craft.

Using the binoculars, he was able to see about 8 to 11 humanoid characters who were looking at him out of the craft’s windows. One of the figures allegedly even communicated a message to Barney telling him to “stay where you are and keep looking”. Barney frightened for his live, took the binoculars from his eyes and ran back to his car. He drove away at a high speed, asking his wife to look for the craft. Betty rolled down the window and looked up and observed solely darkness above them, although it was a clear, starry night. At that time, the vehicle began to vibrate and Hills heard a rhythmic group of buzzing or beeping sounds which bounced off the trunk of their car. They then heard the second series of identical sounds, realizing they were suddenly 35 miles farther down the road compared to a minute ago. They were now in Ashla.
The Hills eventually arrived home safely. They were exhausted and instantly went to sleep. When Betty woke up the following day, she telephoned her sister, Janet and told her about the unusual event they witnessed. Janet advised her to call Pease Air Force Base and report what they have experienced. After hearing Betty’s report, Major Paul W. Henderson, confirmed that The UFO was also discovered by their radar. Among many strange consequences subsequent to the alleged alien abduction (broken watches, the torn leather strap for the binoculars, strange pinkish powder on her dress damaging it irreparably, shiny, concentric circles on their car’s trunk, nightmares etc.) the couple decided to contact a Boston psychiatrist and neurologist, Dr. Benjamin Simon. Famous in his field, Dr. Simon suggested a regressive hypnosis treatment, which might ideally uncover the memories of the two missing hours of time. After 6 months of therapies, Simon expressed his opinion that Betty and Barney Hill had been abducted and brought onboard a mysterious craft. He played an important role in their abduction story and with the latter statement he elevated the credibility of their testimonials.

Some of the memories that were later unveiled include extraterrestrials comming to their car, carrying the Hills onboard the craft, performing various medical and scientific tests on them and before releasing them, Betty and Barney were hypnotized and directed to keep their abduction as a secret. Further, the couple described their captors as “… bald-headed alien beings, about five foot tall, with greyish skin, pear shaped heads and slanting cat-like eyes.” Needless to say, subsequent to the event a number of sceptics suggested the Hills’ hypnotherapy triggered confabulation – the blending of fantasy with memory – arguing that recovered memories are unreliable. However, a thing that critics were not able to explain is that Betty could draw a detailed sketch of the Zeta Reticuli star system which is in the Reticulum constellation, six years prior to astronomers even discovered it.
This event has turned into a milestone case in the UFO folklore and it is still researched and discussed today. The significance of the Hills’ abduction encounter cannot be over-emphasized. It altered the concept of ufology for good.More in the video below.

Kenneth Arnold & Mount Rainier UFO Sighting

Kenneth Arnold and Mount Rainier UFO Sighting (1947)

The revolutionary phenomena associated with Unidentified Flying Objects started with the event occured in Washington state on 24th of June, 1947. Retired World War 2 pilot Kenneth Arnold (1915-1984) declared witnessing 9 mysterious objects hovering over the crest of the Cascade Range close to Mount Rainier.
Arnold was flying back home with the private plane from a business trip making a short detour after learning of a $5,000 reward for the discovery of a U.S. Marine Corps C-46 transport aircraft which had crashed close to Mount Rainier. The skies were entirely clear and there was a gentle breeze. At approximately three pm he noticed a bright flash of a light which he initially believed might have been a nearby plane. Scared he could end up being dangerously near to yet another plane, he immediately after checked the horizon but he could hardly observe anything other than a remote DC-4 aircraft. Approximately half a minute later he spotted a number of bright flashes which seemed to originate from a distance, towards the north of Mount Rainier. He eliminated reflections on the plane’s windows through rocking his airplane, removing his eyeglasses and also by down the windows. He thought of some other explanations for what he saw, for example a flock of geese, yet dominated all these out for many different factors such as speed, altitude and bright glint among others.

The objects continued to hover in the diagonal formation. They ultimately passed from his eyesight. Arnold determined their velocity at approximately twelve hundred Miles per hour – happened to be faster than any known aircraft, which had yet to break the sound barrier.
Arnold explained these objects being flat disks or saucers, despite the fact that he afterwards said that a few of them seemed crescent-shaped. The phrase “flying saucer” was noticed for the first time and this event is credited with being the first of the modern era of UFO sightings. Arnold’s encounter made headlines of international newspapers being followed by numerous similar Unidentified flying object reports. The record beneath is the copy of Kenneth Arnold’s submitted report to Army Air Forces (AAF) intelligence on July 12, 1947. It provides drawings of the objects

Belgium UFO Incident

 Belgium UFO Incident

Belgium sequence of UFO Sightings also referred to as “the Belgian Wave” started off on November 29th, 1989 and peaked with the reports in the night from 30th to 31st March, 1990. Majority of sightings occurred in the Walloon region and at some point thousands of people reported a sighting of an unusual triangular shaped craft that hovered over the Belgian skies, exhibiting unexplainable flight characteristics. The event is clearly considered as one of the best in the history and this is due to the following number of reasons:
-  An Official report was released to the wider public by the Belgian Air Force detailing the events on 30th to 31st of March, 1990.
belgium ufo1 300x215 The Belgian UFO Wave (1989, 1990)

- The Object was noted and even tracked by several radars at the Belgian Air Force bases in Eupen, Semmerkaze, Glors and Bierset, on several occasions simultaneously.
- AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) aircraft was dispatched from Gelsenkirchen and two F-16 aircrafts were sent to hunt down the UFO from Bevokom, which shortly after detected an oval-shaped object on their radars at 3,000 meters.
- A number of visual evidences were provided and can be easily marked as some of the best UFO photos ever caught on tape.
- Not even to mention the number of people that witnessed and reported the sightings. All together there were around 13,500 different witnesses, while around 2,600 individuals submitted official written statements with detailed event descriptions. Further, there were countless reports filled by both, Police and Gendarmerie (a military Belgian force involved in police duties living among civilian populations)
- There was a number of consistent and coinciding reports comming from different locations; Belgium (Eupen, Liege, Plombieres, Kittenis, Baelin, Verviers, Jalhan, St. Vith, Andrimont, Lontzen, Voeren, Herbesthal, eastern Belgium), and some regions of Luxembourg, Holland, and Germany.
- Other unique characteristics that embrace the line of UFO sightings and the object itself, such as the object’s unconventional flight characteristics and uncommon triangular shape with 4 light sources, 3 at the end of each arm (vertices of an equilateral triangle) and 1 right in the middle of the latter. The lights were changing colors between red, green and yellow.

The Sightings
In the following couple of paragraphs I will shortly summarize the two most significant lines of sightings as everything else is more appealing to be seen in the videos below. Since the wave of UFO Sightings starts on the 29th November, 1989, and the peak of UFO Sightings was reached in the night from 30th to 31st March, 1990, you might have guessed which two lines of sighings am I referring to.
The initial night of sightings was just the start of perhaps the best written about and witnessed UFO waves in the history. The occurrences on November 29th, 1989 were documented by at least 30 distinct groups of people, as well as several different groups of law enforcement officials. Each of the accounts defined a sizable object flying noisless across the Belgium landscape at low altitude with a flat, triangular shape and 4 different light sources underneath. This primary sighting would later evolve into a line of even more significant ones within the subsequent months. On a couple of occasions, a set of two F-16 fighters chased the bizarre object, but with no success of making even a visual contact.
belgium eyewitness drawing1 300x162 The Belgian UFO Wave (1989, 1990)

The most significant night of sightings started off at around 23:00 on 30 March, 1990 when the CRC (Control Reporting Center) supervisor at Glons received a number of reports indicating that 3 mysterious lights were observed shifting in direction of Thorembais-Gembloux, which is situated to the South-East of Belgium’s capital. Wavre’s (a town and municipality located in the Belgianprovince of Walloon Brabant) gendarmerie dispatch a patrol to identify the strange object. Several minutes later another set of lights was seen moving towards the first triangle and after a while this set of lights formed itself into a shape of a triangle too. As both objects were picked up by two different radars, in Glons and Semmerzake, and as one of the light sources was witnessed by gendarmerie,
Glons CRC shortly before midnight ordered to get two F-16 fighters to intercept the objects. In the course of the latter both sensations were still plainly visible from the ground maintaining their relative positions although slowly moving over the night sky. We cannot forget that this event solely was witnessed by more than 13,000 people and more than 2,500 filled written statements describing in detail their sightings. Within the next 60 minutes both F-16s attempted 9 distinct interceptions of the targets and 3 times the jets succeeded to find a radar lock for only a few moments but everytime the objects altered their position and speed up to such an extent that the lock was broken instantly. During the initial radar lock, The UFO accelerated from 240 km/h to more than 1,770 km/h whilst changing the altitude from 2,700 m to 1,500 m, then up to 3,350 meters just before climbing down to just about the surface Similar movements were detected throughout both subsequent radar locks and were also described in some other postings (the Tehran UFO incident and the Peruvian dogfight). I think that it is needless to reveal that such manoeuvres would be fatal for a human pilot, which is also outlined by Robert Stack, the narrator, in the Unsolved Mysteries video below. Remarkably, despite the speed involved there was no indication of a sonic boom (Occuring at speed of Mach 1 – approximately 1,225 km/h), which should occur on several occassion due to the drastic direction shiftings. Even though the F-16 aviators did not make a visual contact with targets, the ground witnesses broadly reinforced the data gathered by radars. Subsequent to several additional unconfirmed on-board radar readings the jets eventually returned to base soon after 1 am.

1976 Tehran UFO Incident

1976 Tehran UFO Incident

The 1976 Tehran UFO Incident was a radar and visual sighting of an unidentified flying object (UFO) over Tehran, the capital of Iran, during the early morning hours of 19 September 1976. During the incident, two F-4 Phantom II jet interceptors supposedly lost instrumentation and communications as they approached, only to have them restored upon withdrawal; one of the aircraft also supposedly suffered temporary weapons systems failure, while preparing to open fire.
The incident, recorded in a four-page U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) report distributed to at least the White House, Secretary of State, Joint Chiefs of Staff, National Security Agency (NSA) and Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), remains one of the most well-documented military encounters with anomalous phenomena in history, and various senior Iranian military officers directly involved with the events have gone on public record stating their belief that the object was not of terrestrial origin.

The incident

At approximately 0030 hours local time (2100Z), 19 September 1976, the Imperial Iranian Air Force command post at Tehran received four reports by telephone, from civilians in the Shemiran city district, of unusual activity in the night sky. The callers reported seeing an object similar to a star, but much brighter.
When the command post found no helicopters airborne to account for the reports, they called General Yousefi, assistant deputy commander of operations. General Yousefi at first said the object was only a star, but after conferring with the control tower at Mehrabad International Airport and then looking for himself to see a very bright object larger than a star, he decided to scramble one F-4 Phantom II jet fighter from Shahrokhi Air Force Base in Hamadan, approximately 175 miles (282 km) west of Tehran (for location see map at right).
At 0130 hours (2200Z), the F-4, piloted by Captain Mohammad Reza Azizkhani was launched and proceeded to a point 40 nautical miles (74 km) north of Tehran. It was noted that the object was of such brilliance that it could be seen from 70 miles (110 km) away. When the aircraft approached to approximately 25 nautical miles (46 km) from the object, the jet lost all instrumentation and communications capabilities, prompting Azizkhani to break off the intended intercept and turn back toward Shahrokhi; upon the evasion, both systems resumed functioning.
An F-4D Phantom II of the Imperial Iranian Air Force.

At 0140 hours, a second F-4 was scrambled, piloted by Lieutenant Parviz Jafari. Jafari would eventually retire as a general and participate on 12 November 2007, at a National Press Club conference demanding a worldwide investigation into UFO phenomena. (see also below) Jafari's jet had acquired a radar lock on the object at 27 nautical miles (50 km) range. The radar signature of the UFO resembled that of a Boeing 707 aircraft. Closing on the object at 150 nautical miles (280 km) per hour and at a range of 25 nautical miles (46 km), the object began to move, keeping a steady distance of 25 nautical miles (46 km) from the F-4. The size of the object was difficult to determine due to its intense brilliance. The lights of the object were alternating blue, green, red, and orange, and were arranged in a square pattern. The lights flashed in sequence, but the flashing was so rapid that they all could be seen at once.
While the object and the F-4 continued on a southerly path, a smaller second object detached itself from the first and advanced on the F-4 at high speed. Lieutenant Jafari, thinking he was under attack, tried to launch an AIM-9 sidewinder missile, but he suddenly lost all instrumentation, including weapons control, and all communication. He later stated he attempted to eject, but to no avail, as this system, which is entirely mechanical, also malfunctioned. Jafari then instituted a turn and a negative G dive as evasive action. The object fell in behind him at about 3 to 4 nautical miles (7.4 km) distance for a short time, then turned and rejoined the primary object.

The Dog fight

Once again, as soon as the F-4 had turned away, instrumentation and communications were regained. The F-4 crew then saw another brightly lit object detach itself from the other side of the primary object and drop straight down at high speed. The F-4 crew expected it to impact the ground and explode, but it came to rest gently. The F-4 crew then overflew the site at a decreased altitude and marked the position of the light's touchdown. Jafari would later comment that the object was so bright that it lit up the ground and he could see rocks around it. The object had touched down nearby Rey Oil Refinery on the outskirts of Iran. Then they landed at Mehrabad, noting that each time they passed through a magnetic bearing of 150 degrees from Mehrabad, they experienced interference and communications failure.
A civilian airliner that was approaching Mehrabad also experienced a loss of communications at the same position relative to Mehrabad. As the F-4 was on final approach, they sighted yet another object, cylinder-shaped, with bright, steady lights on each end and a flashing light in the middle. The object overflew the F-4 as they were on approach. Mehrabad tower reported no other aircraft in the area, but tower personnel were able to see the object when given directions by Jafari. Years later, the main controller and an investigating general revealed that the object also overflew the control tower and knocked out all of its electronic equipment as well (see below).

The next day, the F-4 crew flew out in a helicopter to the site where they had seen the smaller object land. In the daylight, it was determined to be a dry lake bed, but no traces could be seen. They then circled the area to the west and picked up a noticeable "beeper" signal. The signal was loudest near a small house, so they landed and questioned the occupants of the house about any unusual events of the previous night. They reported a loud noise and a bright light like lightning.
Further investigation of the landing site, including radiation testing of the area was apparently done, but the results were never made public. Since this event occurred before the fall of the Shah, any records in Tehran itself may be lost.

Rendlesham Forest Incident

Rendlesham Forest Incident

The Rendlesham Forest Incident is the name given to a series of reported sightings of unexplained lights and the alleged landing of a craft or multiple craft of unknown origin in Rendlesham Forest, Suffolk, England, in late December 1980, just outside RAF Woodbridge, used at the time by the U.S. Air Force. Dozens of USAF personnel were eyewitnesses to various events over a two- or three-day period. Some ufologists believe it is perhaps the most famous UFO event to have happened in Britain, ranking amongst the best-known UFO events worldwide. Along with the Berwyn Mountain UFO incident, it has been compared to the Roswell UFO incident in the United States, and is sometimes referred to as "Britain's Roswell".

Forest Area

 26th December

Around 3 a.m. on 26 December 1980 strange lights were reported by a security patrol near the East Gate of RAF Woodbridge apparently descending into nearby Rendlesham Forest. Servicemen initially thought it was a downed aircraft but, upon entering the forest to investigate, they saw strange lights moving through the trees, as well as a bright light from an unidentified object. One of the servicemen, Sgt. Jim Penniston, later claimed to have encountered a "craft of unknown origin" and to have made detailed notes of its features, touched its "warm" surface, and copied the numerous symbols on its body. The object allegedly flew away after their brief encounter. Penniston also claimed to have seen triangular landing gear on the object, leaving three impressions in the ground that were visible the next day.

While undergoing regression hypnosis in 1994 Penniston subsequently claimed that the "craft" he encountered had come from our future, and was occupied by time travellers, not extraterrestrials. Sgt. Penniston's report made shortly after the incident contains no mention of physically encountering an unknown craft, nor of interacting with it. This report and associated sketches are neither signed nor dated, nor are they representative of AF Form 1169, Statement of Witness.

Shortly after 4 a.m. local police were called to the scene but reported that the only lights they could see were those from the Orford Ness lighthouse, some miles away on the coast. Some reports claim that local farmyard animals had been behaving in a state of fear and panic.
After daybreak on the morning of 26 December, servicemen returned to a small clearing near the eastern edge of the forest and found three small impressions in a triangular pattern, as well as burn marks and broken branches on nearby trees. Plaster casts of the imprints were taken and have been shown in television documentaries. At 10.30 a.m. the local police were called out again, this time to see the impressions on the ground, which they thought could have been made by an animal.

Interpretation sigh for the UFO trail in Rendlesham forest

28th December

The servicemen returned to the site again in the early hours of 28 December 1980 with radiation detectors, although the significance of the readings they obtained is disputed. The deputy base commander Lt Col Charles I. Halt investigated this sighting personally and recorded the events on a micro-cassette recorder (see "The Halt Tape", below). The site investigated by Halt was near the eastern edge of the forest
It was during this investigation that a flashing light was seen across the field to the east, almost in line with a farmhouse. The Orford Ness lighthouse is visible further to the east in the same line of sight.
Later, starlike lights were seen in the sky to the north and south, the brightest of which seemed to beam down a stream of light from time to time.
There are claims that the incident was videoed by the USAF; but, if so, the resulting tape has not been made public.

Roswell UFO incident

Roswell UFO incident

The Roswell UFO Incident, also known as Roswell, was a report of an object that crashed near Roswell, New Mexico, in June or July 1947, allegedly an extra-terrestrial spacecraft and its alien occupants. Since the late 1970s the incident has been the subject of intense controversy and several conspiracy theories as to the true nature of the object that crashed.; many UFO proponents maintain that an alien craft was found and its occupants were captured, and that the military then engaged in a cover-up. The incident has turned into a widely known pop culture phenomenon, making the name Roswell synonymous with UFOs. It is the most publicized and controversial of alleged UFO incidents.

On July 8, 1947, the Roswell Army Air Field (RAAF) public information officer Walter Haut in Roswell, New Mexico, issued a press release stating that personnel from the field's 509th Bomb Group had recovered a crashed "flying disk" from a ranch near Roswell, sparking intense media interest. The next day, the press reported that Commanding General of the Eighth Air Force Roger M. Ramey stated that, in fact, a radar-tracking balloon had been recovered by the RAAF personnel, not a "flying disc. A subsequent press conference was called, featuring debris said to be from the crashed object, which seemed to confirm the weather balloon description.

The incident was forgotten and almost completely ignored, even by UFO researchers, for more than 30 years. Then, in 1978, physicist and ufologist Stanton T. Friedman interviewed Major Jesse Marcel who was involved with the original recovery of the debris in 1947. Marcel expressed his belief that the military had covered up the recovery of an alien spacecraft. His story spread through UFO circles, being featured in some UFO documentaries at the time.In February 1980, The National Enquirer ran its own interview with Marcel, garnering national and worldwide attention for the Roswell incident.

Additional witnesses added significant new details, including claims of a huge military operation dedicated to recovering alien craft and aliens themselves, at as many as 11 crash sites, and alleged witness intimidation. In 1989, former mortician Glenn Dennis put forth a detailed personal account, wherein he claimed that alien autopsies were carried out at the Roswell base.

Since then, the story has diverged from its original account of a single debris field into stories of multiple crashes, loads of dead aliens, and charges that the technology recovered from it and a half dozen other crashes since (apparently UFOs crash with some regularity) is behind most of the great technological advances of the last fifty years. It also turned the formerly sleepy little enclave of Roswell into a Mecca for UFO buffs and created a cottage industry that will probably stand longer than the Roman Empire did.
